Support for Postnatal Depression

Postnatal depression is a mental health condition occuring after birth, which affects up to 30% of new parents.

It can cause symptoms such as loss of interest, hopelessness, not being able to cope, crying all the time, anger, excessive anxiety about the baby, panic attacks, sleeplessness, loss of appetite, low mood and these are just a few of the debilitating effects.

Anyone can experience these symptoms, but you may be more likely to have postnatal depression if you have:

  • a traumatic birth experience

  • had depression or another mental health condition previously or it runs in your family

  • a lack of support around you

  • ever experienced abuse

  • you have had difficult experiences in your life or pregnancy

It can be difficult to recognise the signs or you may not want to reach out for support due to fear of judgement, guilt or you don't feel you are worthy of support.

You may feel like you will never get any relief from this.

I am offering a support service for people who have been diagnosed with postnatal depression or are experiencing symptoms without a diagnosis.

This involves a minimum of 3 sessions with me, sometimes more. I will provide space for your story to be heard and then use a self-compassionate approach to support you in reframing your thoughts. A self compassionate approach is one where you bring kindness to your thoughts, rather than meeting them with judgement and criticism.

Session 1 - 60 minutes: hearing your story and validating your thoughts (as detailed above in the birth reflections)

Session 2 - 60 minutes: introducing self compassion, mindfulness and relaxation

Session 3 - 30 minutes: recognising negative thinking styles and how life would change if they didn't exist

this approach is suitable for anyone in the first year of parenthood and is not an alternative to therapy. You can choose to seek support elsewhere if needed and continue to take anti-depressants whilst working with me. It is more of a support service which aims to provide you with the tools and space to begin recognising how harmful your own thoughts can be and ways to neutralise them with self compassion.

Sessions are held via zoom.

Investment: £150 for 3 sessions and  £60 per hour for subsequent sessions if needed
